Frequently asked questions
What is Sodium Grease?
Sodium grease is one of the oldest and most widely used types of grease. Due to its unique structure and performance characteristics, it has maintained its position among industrial lubricants. This grease provides good thermal resistance and effective lubrication, making it suitable for components operating at medium speeds and relatively high temperatures. These properties have made sodium grease a suitable option for equipment installed in dry environments.
Sodium-based grease is a semi-solid lubricant produced using sodium soap and base oil. Due to its high thermal resistance, it is widely used in various industries. This grease has excellent adhesion, and its microscopic structure consists of long, interconnected fiber-like formations. As a result, this structure acts like a natural adhesive, making the grease difficult to remove from metal surfaces.
In terms of temperature resistance, sodium grease performs well and can maintain its lubrication properties within a temperature range of approximately 100 to 120°C.
Another positive characteristic of this grease is its relatively high dropping point. Compared to calcium-based greases, sodium greases generally have a higher dropping point. This property helps maintain grease stability in equipment exposed to high operating temperatures and prevents grease leakage.
Despite these advantages, sodium grease does not have suitable resistance against water and moisture, which is considered one of its main limitations. Due to the water-absorbing nature of sodium soap, exposure to water or high humidity causes it to absorb moisture. After contact with water, the soap structure can break down, resulting in grease separation.
This characteristic limits the use of sodium grease in outdoor environments, humid conditions, or components directly exposed to water. Therefore, having a proper understanding of sodium grease applications is highly important, which will be discussed in the following sections.
Applications of Sodium Grease
Sodium grease is a suitable choice for lubricating components operating at high temperatures due to its high dropping point. Although this grease performs well in dry environments, it is not recommended for humid conditions because of its poor water resistance. Below are some common applications of sodium grease.
1. Older Vehicle Wheels and Trailers
Due to the increase in bearing temperature during operation, sodium-based grease has been widely used for lubricating wheel hub bearings in older vehicles. Its high thermal resistance helps maintain grease stability as components heat up and prevents excessive softening.
2. Furnace Bearings and Bearings Operating at High Temperatures
Sodium grease is used in equipment such as industrial furnaces, dryers, and machinery exposed to continuous heat because it provides better stability under high-temperature conditions compared to some other greases, such as calcium-based grease.
3. Chains and Open Gears
In some industrial chains and open gears operating in dry and hot environments, sodium-based grease plays an important role in reducing friction and preventing component wear. Using this grease improves performance; however, it is not recommended for humid environments or areas exposed to moisture.
